Muslim woman asked to take off her veil in court

A MUSLIM woman was asked to take off her veil in a Midland court to give evidence against her former partner in an assault case.

Leicester magistrates warned Georgina Richards they might not be able to accept her evidence if she kept the veil on.

The 36 year-old removed it and spoke from behind a screen during the trial of former partner Ismail Mangera.

He was later found guilty of punching her in the face and scrawling abuse on her door.

Chairman of the bench Lawrence Faulkner said: “We need to see a person’s facial expressions to assess the evidence they are giving.”
