Egyptian Christian dies of wounds sustained in Libya attack

MINYA, Egypt – An Egyptian Christian died Saturday of wounds he sustained in a militant attack in Libya, medical sources said.

Salama Fawzi, 23, had been injured in a militant attack in the eastern city of Benghazi last week.

But the young Christian Copt succumbed to his wounds at hospital in the Upper Egyptian city of Samallout on Saturday.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has called on Libyan authorities to launch an investigation into the attack, which came one week after seven Egyptian Christians were killed executive-style in Benghazi.

Libya has been struggling to restore order more than two years after the ouster of late strongman Muammar Gaddafi.

More than 1,300 people have been killed in attacks by radical Islamist group Boko Haram in northern Nigeria, with 300,000 fleeing the area. More than half of these are children. The violence is on a similar scale to last year’s unrest in the Central African Republic that provoked a European military intervention.

“We are in a state of war,” Kashim Shettima said on February 17. Shettima is thegovernor of Borno state, one of the worst-hit areas. “Boko Haram are better armed and better motivated than our own troops,” he continued. “It is impossible for us to defeat the Boko Haram.”

London mayor says ‘radicalisation’ must be classed as a form of child abuse

Muslim children who are at risk of being “radicalised” by their parents should be taken into care, according to the London mayor Boris Johnson.

Defining young people being “taught crazy stuff” at home as effectively child abuse, Mr Johnson said the efforts of counter-terrorism officers and social care workers were being hampered by “what I am obliged to call political correctness”.

Syrian Islamists to Christians: pay off or be killed

Syrian Islamists to Christians: pay off or be killed

Persecutions of Christians by radical Islamists in Syria have acquired new forms. In the city of Ar-Raqqah in Syria’s north, members of the group "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" have stated that they would "grant their protection" to Christians only if the latter regularly pay render to Islamists and perform fewer Christian church services. Russia’s authorities are qualifying this as violation of basic human rights.

After they have seized control over Ar-Raqqah, Islamists introduced there a policy that has already been practiced by Muslim authorities in captured areas with non-Muslim population centuries ago. They ordered Christians to pay a "tax" for their right of keeping to their faith – otherwise, Islamists do not guarantee that they wouldn’t kill them. The amount of the "tax" is from 1 to 4 dinars.

Egypt: Knife attack kills Christian woman in southern Egypt

An Egyptian pharmacist has been arrested in connection with the stabbing death of a Christian woman earlier this month.

In a country where anti-Christian violence is a daily occurrence, the death of Madeleine Wagih on Feb. 8 was not widely reported. It received brief mention in one of the more lurid corners of Egyptian online news. It was one act of violence among the many that have followed the military's removal of former President Mohamed Morsi last summer.

Since August's deadly clashes between pro-Morsi demonstrators and army, scores of churches have been ransacked. Kidnappings have become epidemic; Christian doctors and pharmacists are favoured targets. Christians generally are seen as having access to money, and for being supporters of the military takeover that drove the Muslim Brotherhood underground. Though the military-run interim government has outlawed the Brotherhood and rounded up its leaders, Egypt's Christian leaders complain security forces do not show the same determination to track down the arsonists, kidnappers and killers who have lashed out at Christians and their churches.

In Kom Ombo, 48 kilometers (30 miles) north of Aswan, the Muslim on Feb. 8 attacked several Christians, including employees of two Coptic-owned pharmacies and two students who were walking nearby. Although the alleged assailant has been arrested, residents fear there could be others whose sole motivation for attacking was hostility toward Christians.

Afghan Girl 'Suicide Bomber' Refuses To Return To Family, Says She Was Forced To Wear Explosives

A 10-year-old girl trussed up in explosives and sent to blow-up a checkpoint has told Afghan police she will not return to her "abusive" family.

The young girl, named only as Spozhmai, told police she was scared when her brother hit her, and ordered her to wear the explosive-packed vest. He promised her that she would not die, but her targets would, she said.

The girl is in protective custody in Lashkar Gah, after an Afghan soldier spotted her acting suspiciously and saw she was wearing the vest.

War on Christmas? It's more like 'War on Christians' in many parts of the world

Morning Star News' Top 10 Persecution Stories of 2013

In Nigeria, terrorists weren't the only ones terrorizing Christians.

By the Editor

http://morningstarnews.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7ec6d7eb2533a90581f839110&id=35e9065a61&e=b2cec00157January 10, 2014 (Morning Star News) – Last year Egypt saw its greatest level of attacks on Christians; more Christians were killed in Syria’s civil war than anywhere else; and an Islamist rebel take-over in the Central African Republic brought new atrocities to the historically unstable country. But where political instability and civil war were not contributing factors, the greatest targeting of Christians primarily for their faith took place in Nigeria (even if oppression overall was worse in North Korea and Saudi Arabia). The stories have become so repetitive that they risk becoming at once routine and unbearable; on the ground, however, Nigerian Christians refuse to give in to the trauma. Their faith shines, even in the face of new causes for fear in 2013: The line blurred between terrorist groups and attacking tribal herdsmen, and government soldiers stationed to protect Christians sometimes killed them.

Radical Islamist preacher fails to condemn Lee Rigby murder

Radical Islamist preacher Anjem Choudary has declined to condemn the killing of Drummer Lee Rigby, insisting Prime Minister David Cameron and British foreign policy were to blame for the murder.

The former leading member of banned extremist organisation Al-Muhajiroun said he was "very proud" of killer Michael Adebolajo as "a practising Muslim and a family man", but "differed" with him about the interpretation of Islam which he used to justify the murder.

Egypt charges former president Morsi with sponsoring terrorism

Overthrown Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi is to stand trial on terror charges that carry the death penalty.

He has been accused of conspiring with the Palestinian group Hamas, Lebanon’s Hezbollah and others to carry out a campaign of violence in the Sinai Peninsula and beyond to destabilise the country following his removal.

Prosecutors claim that while he was president Mr Morsi and his aides revealed state secrets to the militant groups and to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. He and 35 others, including the Muslim Brotherhood’s top three leaders, are also accused of sponsoring terrorism and carrying out combat training and other acts to undermine Egypt’s stability.
